PNG Foreign Minister Chairs 21st MSG Foreign Ministers Meeting in Port Moresby

Papua New Guinea today assumed the role of Chair of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, with PNG Foreign Minister Rimbink Pato addressing fellow Foreign Ministers from Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.
In an age of constant change, Minister Pato reminded MSG members of the need to work together in unity, especially at a time when the Melenesian Region was gaining prominence with Papua New Guinea hosting APEC in 2018.
Minister Pato also spoke briefly on the future of MSG, particularly given the recent report by the MSG Eminent Person’s Group.
“We have not achieved all our ideals has expressed in that document, but let us in this meeting, reafirm our determiniation to achieve the goals that spring from them.” Minister Pato said.
Over the coming days, leaders from the MSG countries will discuss a range of issues among top priorities, improvement of trade within MSG countries, which according to Minister Pato is key to the long-term success of this region.
“Our region, the Pacific and the World will become more properous if we committ to the principles of fair trading; prosperity will continue for our children and our grandchildren, only if development is sustainable.”
