Vanimo – The Indonesian ‘ Dollar Diplomacy’ Begins Here, Ends Here

In the tranquility, and ignorance, where time can stand still, Vanimo the coastal border town stood the test of time. And, scrutiny.

West Papua Solidarity March. It was happening in Port Moresby led by PNG patriots and MPs who had stepped up the conversation on West Papua. Home – run. NCD Governor Powes Parkop. And, Oro Governor Gary Juffa.

In Vanimo, it is no longer an academic exercise, trial and error. One mistake would be fatal. And, the marchers numbering several hundreds and up to a thousand left the PNG 44th Independence Anniversary celebrations to join in.

Vanimo came to a stand – still. NIO personnel scrambled for assurance that the outcome of the democratic expression to show solidarity for West Papua remained civilised because it matters.

The diplomatic approach is also about warfare, but the words are carefully used to foster a friendly relationship between nations with conflicting goals.

And, competing national interest.

We are reminded of the prose of Desiderata:

GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

I was there.

Vanimo for West Papua!
